A Fracture Diary - Episode 1
Day of accident, 14th October 2018
It was a very fine day until then. Until that very moment when the lift crash-landed on the ground.
Ouch! I was feeling dizzy. I didn't feel like getting up and walking at all. And it was paining quite a lot.
😩
I was like this. Thank God that the mechanic came the moment the lift fell! Soon I crawled of the lift and sat down on the floor.
"Hari, get up!"
"Come on, we can shift you to the hospital only if you can get up!"
I struggled to get up. I got up, but I couldn't stand even for five seconds! And it hurt a lot.
My grandmother and grandfather, who were with me, said,
"Seems like he is not able to get up. We might have to take him to the hospital in a wheelchair." So we called the hospital security and somehow, after five minutes I was lying down on the hospital casualty bed. That hospital was quite familiar with me and so are the doctors and nurses there. So the nurse at the casualty said,"What's happened to you? You look so unhappy." I replied, " No aunty, I fell with the lift and it has been paining from then." The nurse had informed my grandparents that the doctor will come only at ten. She also said that I needed an X-ray immediately and so she advised to take me to the other hospital. Somehow I managed to get to the other hospital. There the radiologist, on the advice of the doctor took X-rays of my thigh and ankle...
After looking at the X-rays the doctor said,"There's a fracture on the left femur bone and a hair-line crack on the right ankle." " You will have to admit him in the hospital. We might have to do a surgery. We will do it with a doctor from another hospital in Kilpauk," said he.
My grandparents didn't like the idea of admitting me in that hospital. Firstly, the hospital was not clean and there were a lot of mosquitoes there. Secondly, they knew that I will have peace of mind only with a doctor familiar with me. Lastly, the doctor at the other hospital is a trained professional and is an orthopaedic surgeon (the right kind of doctor for me).
So my grandmother said," We will admit him in the other hospital because that doctor is familiar to us." So we called an ambulance and soon I was back to my favourite hospital.
After a few hours, the doctor came and said that he will take another X-ray after 12 hours of observation. And soon I was lying on the bed in my favourite room in the hospital.
My father, who had gone to Delhi to see my mother, decided to come back after hearing the news about the incident. My mother became sad after hearing the news. She also sent a flower which had fallen down from the Durga idol ( it is believed that if we offer a flower to God with a wish and after that the flower falls off, it means that God had acknowledged your wish ) via my father. Via FaceTime I said to my mother that I will become fine and she needn't worry.
Somehow I managed, but I didn't know that I would get a mini-vacation for myself - so enjoyable, isn't it?

ReplyDeleteHari, your accident has taken me back by around 50 years. I had fractured my right femur and left ankle in an accident between the scooter on which I was the pillion rider and a bus. After the fall I too tried to stand up, as a reflex action I suppose. That did the greater damage. The fractured bone overlapped by 2 inches. Besides, the nearest hospital I was rushed to was a government hospital. 2 months of mis-treatment cost me 1 year of schooling because I could not walk. In a way, when ever I looked back T the accident I could not help but feel that it was a turning point for the better in my life. Today, post retirement age also I am still doing very well in life. I have no doubt in my mind that you will emerge much stronger from this unfortunate situation.Pray for your speedy and full recovery. I like the spirit in which you posted the incident. Get well soon. God Bless you.
